Who are we?

It is natural to ask whether the UK has enough sunlight to make solar power worthwhile. The answer is surprising to many. In fact, there is more solar energy in the UK than in many places in Europe where solar panels are widespread.


How can this be? Solar panels perform better in cooler temperatures so despite the cloudy weather the UK is known for performance efficiency is high. Panel performance has also improved massively in the last ten years; therefore you need many fewer panels to achieve the same results as ten years ago. The UK receives a comparable amount of sunlight as Germany, one of the biggest solar markets in the world. 

Is there enough sun in London? It's not like Madrid.

A photovoltaic solar cell converts solar energy directly into electrical energy, using photovoltaics. These facilities allow you to save approximately 59% of your electricity bill and are usually repaid in 7-10 years, when their useful life is usually more than 25 years. But what is exactly a photovoltaic cell?

Photovoltaic cells are layers of silicon "doped" with phosphorus and boron, which, thanks to solar radiation that originates from the sunlight, creates a flow of electrical energy, through the “release” of electrons, which leads to a voltage difference (volts) between the two layers. To get usable performance, it's common to arrange them on a module (or panel) so that the voltage matches a usable DC (direct current) system. 

The energy generated in DC form is transformed into AC (alternating current) that can be used directly in electrical devices, stored in batteries or transported through the transmission network to be consumed.

How do PV Solar systems work?

Like for Like: price matches will only be offered on a “like for like” basis. We would define this as an identical system designed using the same key components. This would include the same make and model of solar panels, inverters, mounting system (roof) and battery storage.

Format: the full quotation must be provided in PDF format, and must come from an authorised retailer in the UK. Price matches will not be offered on quotes from sole traders or businesses operating outside of the UK.

Number of offers: One price-match per customer. Once a price-match is accepted we will not be able to offer further reductions in price. Any changes to a system after a price-match has been accepted and/or a contract has been signed may result in price changes.

MCS certification: Only quotes from MCS Certified installers are eligible.


Promotions and discounts: price matches do not apply to any discounts or special offers or promotions being run by other businesses. This includes but is not limited to:
- flash sales
- timed promotions
- free offers and/or bundles

Non-transferable: a price match offer is not transferable and will only apply to the original customer.

Price Match Terms and Conditions

The inverter and the battery will usually be installed and connected in the same room and located in a cupboard next to the fuse box or in the loft space. Please note that the room where the battery is installed needs to be suitable and to comply with any regulatory requirements and/or relevant manufacturer guidelines for ventilation, fire extinguishing, etc. Furthermore, the wall or surface where the battery is installed needs to be sufficiently dimensioned to carry the weight of the battery. Please note that structural reinforcements may be necessary in order to safely install the battery, and this may result in additional costs for the customer.

Where will the inverter and battery be installed?

After the PV solar system is installed on your roof, the last step that needs to be done before you can start consuming the electricity produced by the system is to receive a G98/G99 certificate, or an approval that allows you to connect the system to the national grid. Please note: 

obtaining G98/G99 certificates is mandatory and if not obtained your system can be permanently cut off from the grid.


The installer is responsible for filing for the certificates and Otovo provides them to you once they are issued according to the system installed:

G98 certificate - A certificate designated for systems with a potential output of up to 3.68 kWp. This certificate will be filed by Otovo once the installation is complete and is approved automatically.

G99 certificate - A certificate designated for systems with a potential output of 3.68 kWp and above. This certificate is filed by Otovo before the installation takes place and will takes at least 35-45 working days to be approved or declined.

What are G98 and G99 certificates and why does it take so long to receive them?

At the moment, we don’t offer bird proofing or iboost features as part of our solar systems. However, once an installer is assigned to execute your project, we will have the installer contact you directly to provide you with a quote for including these features in the system. Please note if your solar system includes a battery you won’t need an iboost as any excess energy produced from the system will be stored in the battery.

Do you offer bird proofing and or iboost features?

Our installers work with you to find an installation time that works around your schedule with the least possible disturbance. A few days before your installation date scaffolding will be erected. On installation day, a team of 2-3 technicians will come to your home, where they will typically spend one or two days fixing the panels to the roof. Length of installation depends on how big the roof is, what kind of security is needed for us to work safely, and what kind of roofing you have. The electrician then connects the system to the fuse box and puts the system into operation.

How do we calculate this savings? This 94% savings figure is calculated by comparing what the average household would pay per year for electricity on the Energy Price Cap (£1067) from 01 July 23 - to what they would pay with a 4kWp solar system with battery. Assuming a household uses 30% of their generation (£360) and exports 70% on a £0.055 rate through the Smart Export Guarantee (£154) yearly savings could equal £514, an up to 48% savings. Adding a battery can increase self consumption up to 80% meaning a household could save £960 + £44 (SEG export) = £1004, up to 90% of their annual electricity bill.

Changing household electricity consumption patterns such as setting up timers for appliances like dishwashers/washing machines could increase self consumption rates more, further increasing savings with or without a battery.
